One Young World

One Young World summit took place at London’s Excel Centre on the 9th – 10th February 2010 where six plenary sessions will be guided by One Young World’s counselors including international humanitarian figures such as Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

As part of its support of the event, Conqueror has sponsored young people from seven countries to attend the inaugural summit, offering the chance to add their voice to the over 1,000-strong forum.

Tan Ken Ling, a Conqueror sponsored delegate from Malaysia, comments: “I believe in shaping a better world, speaking out when no one dares to, rejecting oppression, and being tolerant, working hand in hand with anyone that has their sights set on doing good. ”

In addition to its sponsorship, Conqueror created the ‘The Blank Sheet Project’ display to enable delegates to express their aspirations to change the world. A 100 ft single sheet of Conqueror paper was installed at the event, bearing the statement “If I could change one thing to make the world a better place, I would…” Delegates were invited to write their completed statement on the paper, adding to contributions from One Young World’s illustrious counsellors. The best thoughts and ideas were presented to select global business leaders, organisations and governments around the world.

Conqueror also provided all delegates with a notebook printed on Conqueror 100% recycled paper, which contained questions relating to the plenary sessions at the summit. The questions asked for delegates’ views on how businesses can develop a sustainable low carbon economy and how brands and consumers should change their behaviour to actively protect the environment. Answers were submitted to the ‘Blank Sheet Project’ stand and online via Facebook, Twitter and www.conqueror.com/blanksheet. Once collated, the resolutions will form a future business manifesto to be sent after the event by Conqueror to the World Economic Forum Task Force, global business leaders and selected bodies including the G-20, WWF, The Climate Group and others.

Jonathan Mitchell, Business Director at Conqueror, comments: “This is a unique event providing young people with a means to have their say on today’s most critical and compelling international issues. It’s also important we don’t just ask the questions but that we also take forward the answers given by the delegates to drive real change – providing businesses with valuable insights to shape their strategic thinking in the future. As a business it is also a great opportunity for us to engage with young people in today’s digital age to demonstrate the value of sustainably produced paper as a vital tool in the communications mix.”

About Tan Ken Ling:
Through the past 23 years, I've seen my dad work so hard, my momhelping out by being as thrifty as possible, lifting our family from being a low income family slowly but surely to where we are now. However, being slightly better off now doesn't mean we forget our roots, and my parents make sure I'm well aware of that -That achieving your goals through your own hardworkand skills rather than other people's connections will gain us more respect and satisfaction.

During college time, I was very active in the college Student Council, rising from Technical Committee to Assistant marketing manager to Activity Manager. Inmy 4 years there, I've help organized a lot of activities for the college students and also spearhead Christmas Charity events for orphans, hoping to bring a smile to their face.

Besides that, I'm also a freelance writer for The Star newspaper, focusing mainly on issues and events that will be of interest to college students.
Since stepping into the working world this year and a half, I'vealways look for ways to keep myself at pace with world issues despite my hectic schedule as an IT Specialist at IBM, and have recently also stand as a candidate for IBM's 2010 Clubbers (awaiting results) hoping through IBM Clubbers, I would be able to spend my free time organizing events for IBMers and also hopefully organizing more charity events or environmental awareness events. What best to do my little part for society, creating awareness than through inside one of the largest company in the world, a company that also share the same vision as us.
